No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
